Still and other lives

There is something of the meditative and hermetic about sitting in a room alone, studying objects of little importance with a concentration rarely given to anything else in our lives.

I started using still-ilfe arrangements through an interest in formally constructed non-representational painting, using objects as stand-ins for abstract shapes. This enables me to explore  the qualities of space that seem to be a constant within the history of painting;  it serves as a reference  from outside the discrete space of the painting and provides  pleasure and interest in looking,  including and beyond  the formal qualities of colour and shape.

Recently I've become interested in the way paintings provide rhythm and pause within architecture and have started a series of paintings on this theme.

There's been a  short poem by the Scottish artist Thomas A Clark pinned on my studio wall for the last two or thee years:

"nothing coincides with its representation/ stop, look, wait"

It sums up better than I can how I feel about the practice of painting.                                                        

Most of the paintings on this page have been produced in the last eighteen months..
